Chicago Sculpture International is holding its' first biennale from now until June 16th at the Flatfilegalleries, 217 N. Carpenter. The group is the first local affilate in the U.S. of International Sculpture Center, publishers of the well-regarded Sculpture magazine.
The local group is less than two
years old and formed to fulfil the need of sculptors for artistic
relationships. Members explore exhibit opportunities and
share a panoply of information for mutual benefit.
A spokesperson for CSI, sculptor Bob Emser indicated that when the group began, an amazing 120 artists responded to the initial meeting call. He mentioned that sculptors are particularly interactive with one another, the profession being one that often relies on friends for ideas, the sharing of equipment, brawn, etc. Gallery director Susan Aurinko of Flatfile has generously contributed space for the exhibit. The 33 exhibiting artists were selected by a "blind" jury of professionals including Paul Klein, Director of the new Chicago Art Foundation, Michal Raz-Russo, a private curator, and noted art writer/critics Polly Ullrich and James Yood.
The photos shown here are of "Specimen Days" (left) by Dennis Lee Mitchell and "Fraternal" (right) by Jan Petry. It was a definite dilemma to pick and choose pieces to show on this website, as I found much of interest in the work displayed. All pieces are for sale (to tempt you.)
A catalog of the exhibit is available without charge and parking is possible directly in front of Flatfile.
CSI Biennale 2006, FLATFILEgalleries, 217 N. Carpenter. Hours are 11-6, Tuesday-Saturday or by appointment at 312.491.1190.
