Portuguese Muffins Beat Out English

Brand new to Chicago through the determined efforts of my friend Eve Noonan are "ports" or Portuguese muffins.  They are apparently a big thing on the east coast at gourmet places like Dean & Deluca but had to be hand-transported to town until just recently when they appeared  at Fox and Obel.  The refrigerator case you're looking for is way in the back on the east wall with the eggs.

Central Bakery in Fall River, Mass is responsible for this old/new delight.  It's a family enterprise that's been up and running since 1975 when Dave Lopes' grandmother brought her recipe to this country and her children decided to open a bakery.  Ports are the bakery's only product.  Dave is the current charge d'affaires, conducting business from his cell phone while making his local deliveries personally.  His dad is semi-retired but provides crucial assistance, he told me.

Ports are larger and flatter and a bit sweeter than English muffins but the big treat is the texture so you've got to try one to get the full effect.  They're swell with jam and make wonderful sandwiches...imagine chicken salad at a picnic in the park or a Cubs game.  A posh hotel in San Francisco uses them instead of hamburger buns. Yum.

Eve says she prefers a swift pan-fry in a skillet with butter or oil but it sounds as if toasting them is the preparation most used.  If you really get addicted you can keep a supply in the freezer.  Price is $4.59 for a package of six.

Ports at Fox & Obel, 401 E. Illinois.  Free valet parking or in the inside lot of AMC Theaters.  Look for F & O sign about a half block west.  You can also often find a spot in front of the store in the 15 minute flashing light area.
