services, shopping
All within easy range are a lamp and china repair shop, a large resource for kitchen and bath hardware, and a vast greenhouse specializing in annuals.
Individually they are:
David's, Inc.
Jack Goldberg has been in this business for 50 years! The small shop in a strip mall repairs all
manner of lamps including chandeliers both reasonably and rapidly. They also recover worn lamp shades...just bring in the original frame.
Porcelain, jade, ivory and crystal can be repaired and crystal engraving is offered as well.
The store carries some specialized gift items such as Lladro figurines and a variety of Swarovski crystal.
Jack says he loves this business, particularly meeting and talking to people from all over. The shop deservedly has a clientele from all over the city.
David's is at 4352 W. Touhy. Call 847.675.4100 for specific hours. Closed Sunday and Monday.
Decorator Hardware & Bath
A longtime favorite of mine is this great resource. There's a huge inventory of cabinet pulls (only a few styles are pictured) and bathroom accessories. If you are
particular about such things as the typeface on house numerals
(me too) this may be the best selection around.
Many items stocked are available in a variety of finishes such as brushed and shiny chrome, (brushed looks better longer!), brass, antiqued, even some colored plastics.
The staff is extremely knowledgeable and happy to special order items if necessary. Keep in mind that architects, designers and contractors get trade discounts. Most are willing to pass the savings along to you if you do the legwork, i.e., choose the style you want.
I noticed some handsome round sinks on my last visit. This is a great place to browse around for special items and designs.
Access their website at www.decoratorhardware.com for illustrations of products carried, although I still recommend a personal visit!
Decorator Hardware & Bath, 3921 W. Touhy, 847.677.5533. Closed Sunday.
Urhausen Greenhouses
Just past Decorator Hardware, you'll come to North East Prairie Road. Turn right and proceed
through the developing residential McMansion area for a few blocks and you'll arrive at the home, since 1922, of these large greenhouses. Annuals are the specialty and they're grown right here on the premises. Many fresh herb and vegetable plants as well. Prices are reasonable for the city.
Be forewarned; no credit cards are accepted so you must bring cash or a check with proper id.
Hours during May and June, the prime planting season are M-F 8AM-8PM; Sat & Sun 8AM-5PM.
Urhausen Greenhouses, 6973 N. East Prairie Rd., Lincolnwood. 847.675.1573.
