That human monument of Chicago architecture, Louis Sullivan, will be honored in a multi-facted birthday celebration beginning Saturday September 16th with a tour of the wondrous Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University. The building itself was built between 1886-1889
and at one time housed a hotel, the theatre and a sixteen story office tower, the first multi-function building ever. Its construction created an international stir.
Accoustics in the theater were deemed perfect. Over time the facility fell into disrepair but it was carefully restored and reopened in 1967. The restoration is ongoing.
You may tour the theater gratis on Saturday, September 16 and 23 at 10AM but you must call to make a reservation as space is limited. 312.341.9668.
In addition there will be a panel discussion and conversation with Ben Weese, Jack Hartray, Laurence Booth and Daniel P. Coffey, architects involved in the restoration on Monday, September 18 at 6PM. Rick Kogan will moderate.
A concert is scheduled in Rudolph Ganz Recital Hall at Roosevelt University, Tuesday, September 26 at 7PM and a lecture on Louis Sullivan and the Beaux Arts by David Garrard Lowe will take place on Monday, October 9 at 6PM.
