Try an offbeat theatrical experience and attend Dream Theatre's innovative new production of "Ismene" which opened last week at the new side project space on Jarvis. Chicago is deservedly well-known as a fertile
ground for underground theater and Jeremy Menekseoglu's revisionist production begins where Sophocles "Antigone" (as reinterpreted by Menekseoglu in a recent production) left off. "Ismene" definitely offers some unusual twists, both in the classic vein and in its relevance to contemporary life.
The acting is uniformly well done and the shoestring production is convincing.
"Ismene" is highly recommended by the Chicago Reader, New City and by chicagoTips. Menekseoglu's "Antigone" was also praised by the Reader.
Dream Theatre's mission is to break down the barriers between actor and audience. The company was founded in 1998 at the Moscow Art Theater and has also mounted productions in Berlin, New York and other U.S. venues.
"Ismene" runs until August 13 and is presented on Thursdays through Saturdays at 8PM and on Sundays at 7PM. Tickets are $15 and $10 for students.
